Rural America at a Disadvantage Without Broadband

A recent Houston Chronicle profile paints a vivid picture of life on the other side of the digital divide: without broadband, simple online activities can take minutes and hours instead of seconds.

In today's 21st century digital economy, countless everyday tasks can now be completed online with just the click of a button — if you have a high-speed connection.

According to Brian Mefford, CEO of Speed Matters' partner Connected Nation:

It's the technology that can level the field for everybody and is especially powerful for people who have been isolated geographically.

Unfortunately, huge chunks of America survive without access to broadband. In Texas, about 45 percent of the state's land has no access to high-speed Internet service.

The Communications Workers of America supports the National Broadband Plan and its blueprint to increase rural connectivity and wire all anchor institutions with 1-gigabyte Internet connections.
