Reassigning Spectrum To Mobile Broadband Promises Investment, Jobs

A new report from Analysis Group, an economic, financial, and business strategy consulting firm, predicts that reassigning spectrum to mobile broadband could produce immense benefits to the U.S. economy. The report's authors, David Sosa and Marc Van Audenrode wrote that:

"... reassignment of 300 MHz of spectrum to mobile broadband within five years will spur $75 billion in new capital spending, creating more than 300,000 jobs and $230 billion in additional Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The release of an additional 200 MHz of new spectrum after five years will create an additional 200,000 jobs and increase GDP by an additional $155 billion."

Moreover, they predicted that there would be a ripple effect. "Reassigning additional spectrum to mobile broadband," they wrote, "also would generate substantial spillover effects as companies such as Apple, Google and Qualcomm, small application developers and other innovative start-up companies rush to create new mobile broadband products and services."

Sosa and Audenrode warn, however, that the wireless industry needs additional spectrum to create growth and jobs, and that the federal government must implement changes in the public airwaves. By facilitating the reallocation of underutilized spectrum," they wrote, "policymakers can create a favorable environment for private sector investment in critical wireless infrastructure that will create jobs, spur demand and encourage innovation."
