Broadband and telemedicine can save lives
USDA Rural Development and Cooperstown-based Bassett Healthcare joined forces to demonstrate the life saving capabilities of broadband and medical technologies, on Oct. 27.
The event celebrated USDA's 60th Anniversary of its Telecommunications Program.
On display was a digital mammography unit which uses a broadband connection to share imagery instantly with multiple remote locations.
In the past, USDA Rural Development has provided Bassett with funding to create broadband networks that share data between hospitals and for a "40-foot-long mobile mammography unit" which has "greatly improved access to mammography screening for women living in Bassett's rural 8,000-square-mile service area."
USDA Rural Development is tasked with expanding socioeconomic opportunities and improving the overall quality of life for rural America.
