We touch our smartphones 2,600 times a day

When was the last time you made a call, read an email, responded to a text message, searched the web, or used the GPS on your phone? Probably not long ago – and it probably won’t be long before you reach for it again. A recent study counted “every tap, type, swipe, and click” from a user sample and found that average smartphone users touch their phones 2,617 times each day. For you “heavy” smartphone users, the total is almost 5,500 touches per day.

The average person uses her smartphone for about two and a half hours per day, while heavy users clock in at about three hours and 45 minutes. In general, users prefer lots of little phone sessions – a text message here, checking the weather there – to longer, sustained usage. The activity most likely to increase single-session, sustained usage? Netflix, of course.+
