Texas congressman hammers Sprint on job cuts

Houston Democratic U.S. Representative Gene Green took to the floor of the House on May 9 to criticize Sprint Corporation and its possible acquisition of T-Mobile.

Green noted that since SoftBank bought Sprint, Texans have suffered. “Sprint,” said Green, “laid off more than 2,700 call center workers, almost 900 of whom were in my home state of Texas.”

As far as the merger, Green said he agreed with the doubts raised by FCC Chair Tom Wheeler and Assistant Attorney General Bill Baer: that it would reduce competition [which] “drives innovation and lower prices in the wireless market.”

As a result, he said, “Congress must take a careful and critical look at this deal if and when it is announced and stand up for what’s best for American consumers and American jobs.”
