Obama: U.S. to bring broadband to "nearly every community in America"

President Obama signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Tuesday, which is funding $7.2 billion for grant programs to increase the deployment and adoption of high speed Internet.

In his remarks about the bill's passage, Obama said:

"Because we know we can't build our economic future on the transportation and information networks of the past, we are remaking the American landscape with the largest new investment in our nation's infrastructure since Eisenhower built an interstate highway system in the 1950s. Because of this investment, nearly 400,000 men and women will go to work... bringing critical broadband connections to businesses and homes in nearly every community in America [and working on other infrastructure projects]... that will improve travel and commerce throughout the nation."

The passage of the economic stimulus bill and President Obama's continued dedication to improving broadband in the United States is a big victory for the Speed Matter's campaign. However, the fight to bring high speed Internet access to all of America hasn't been won yet. We need to make sure those funds are spent effectively, and continue to spread the word to all of America about the importance of affordable broadband Internet connections.
