FCC Proposes Rules to Expand Access for the Disabled

In a bid to make future technologies more accessible to individuals with disabilities the FCC has proposed new rules that would implement additional elements of the 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act of 2010.

The expanded rules would require device manufacturers to make mobile phone Internet browsers accessible to individuals who are blind or visually impaired, and would require broadcasters to provide video descriptions for much of their programming.

These steps will go a long way in expanding accessibility for the 54 million communications consumers with disabilities across the country. Speed Matters, in partnership with the American Association of People with Disabilities, is a strong supporter of expanding technological access to all Americans regardless of ability.
