FCC Announces Competition to Fuel Low-Income Broadband Adoption

Today, the FCC announced a grant program designed to uncover the best ways to increase broadband adoption rates among low-income Americans.

The newly created "Broadband Adoption Lifeline Pilot Program" will award funds for pilot projects that test how best to increase adoption of high-speed Internet among low-income Americans.

The competition uses $25 million in savings from the FCC's major reforms for earlier this year. Grantees will begin their year-long project in the fall of this year. The FCC hopes to gather high-quality data to guide longer-term efforts from these programs.

CWA and Speed Matters applaud this effort as a another step to close the digital divide.
