Mayor, City Residents, CWA Demand High-Speed Internet in Buffalo

Business growth in city centers is increasingly reliant on broadband speed. Connected communities can support new economic endeavors and provide their residents with greater health and education opportunities. In Buffalo, the need for high-speed connectivity has resulted in a city-wide campaign to bring Verizon FiOS broadband to neighborhoods in need.

The campaign, "Don't Bypass Buffalo," has the support of Buffalo's Mayor Byron W. Brown and a coalition of government officials, community activists, unions and civil rights advocates, among them Jim Wagner of CWA.

"People in Buffalo want FiOS as much as people in Amherst. Verizon should not bypass Buffalo residents and businesses, limiting jobs and future opportunity to just the suburbs," said Jim Wagner, President of CWA Local 1122.

According to Ava White of VOICE Buffalo:

"Another important benefit is the opportunities for small businesses, institutions of higher education, and healthcare facilities to access the high-speed, fiber optic network, helping to make their overall information technology platforms more efficient and expedient."

High-speed Internet connections must be made available to communities across the United States. U.S. cities, which serve huge populations, cannot afford to be left behind.
