Chapel Hill, NC authorizes AT&T U-verse buildout

The university city of Chapel Hill, North Carolina  has given its approval to AT&T to build out its fiber 1 Gbps “U-verse with GigaPower.”

AT&T entered into discussion with the North Carolina Next Generation Network (NCNGN), which led to confirmed or pending agreements with a series of state communities. At present, Raleigh, Cary, Winston-Salem, and Durham have all ratified the agreement.

These moves put AT&T head to head with the dominant cable operator, Time Warner.

North Carolina is not the first U-verse with GigaPower rollout. Last January, AT&T began buildout in Austin, Texas. And, AT&T is considering metro areas across the country including Chicago, Los Angeles, Houston and St. Louis.
