Broadband Expansion Tops UN Development Agenda

Broadband development will be near the top of the agenda when the United Nations General Assembly convenes on September 20.

When world leaders arrive in New York in about a month they will receive a report from a the Broadband Commission — a group of prominent business and government leaders — that will outline how broadband can further the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals.

The report is expected to define strategies for accelerating broadband expansion worldwide and examine how broadband can improve the delivery of social services including healthcare, education, and public safety.

The commission is co-chaired by President Paul Kagame of Rwanda and Carlos Slim Helu, chairman of Grupo Carso. The committee was jointly launched by the UN International Telecommunications Union and UNESCO at the 2010 World Summit on Information Technology in Geneva.
